If you love winter…

If you love winter, then you must love this bird. It’s the Dark-eyed junco, which appears during the winter when cold air sweeps across the southern lands. Hopping and chirping around frozen bushes and bare trees, its dualism of black and white stands out beautifully against the snow patches.

In Native American culture, this bird symbolizes spiritual guidance and change, as it’s considered the emissary of the divine. More broadly, it signifies change, metamorphosis, and transformation, just like winter’s apparent stillness, when life silently regenerates beneath the thawing snow.

The Dark-eyed junco comes and stays until the cold days melt into the warmth of the Spring, so be sure to enjoy the junco’s brief visit before it flits away to the northern lands!
